Grace (Trueman) High

Danville Commercial News - 21 Nov 1964

Danville, Ill. - Mrs. Grace High, 64, of 1116 Wabash, passed away Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where she had been a patient five days.

She was born April 11, 1900, to Henry and Mattie Leach Trueman, former Veedersburg residents. She was married to Jesse High, May 17, 1917.

Mr. High survives his widow, along with two sons and two daughter. Mrs. Emma Switzer of Veedersburg is one of six surviving sisters.

She was a member of the Bowman Avenue Methodist Church.

The Johnson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Atherton Cemetery in Danville.

Richard H. Johnson

Richard H. Johnson, 77, of 203 E. Raymond, Danville chief of police for 17 years until his retirement in 1951, died at 2 a.m. Friday (April 6, 1973) at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday. He first worked with his father in the Johnson Printing Co.

He served as supervisor of Danville Township from 1928 to 1930 and was with the Danville Police Department from 1931 to 1951. He later served as director of public housing from 1953 to 1955.

He was commander of the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry of the Illinois Reserve Militia, and was retired as Brigadier General of the 3rd Illinois Brigade. He served in World War I in the Army Ordnance Dept.

He was a past commander and 50 year member of Curtis G. Redden Post 210 of the American Legion. Also a member of the Elks Lodge and a former member of the Salvation Army Board. He was a charter member of the American Business Club.

He graduated from Danville High School and from the University of Illinois in 1919. Born Aug 20, 1895, in Danville, he was the son of Curran S. and Lucretia Dillon Johnson. He married Dorothy Primm April 16, 1921, in Chicago, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard H. Jr. of Westerville, Ohio and Hubert of Chatham, N.J.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Sally) Froman of Freehold, N.J. and Mrs. Richard (Mary) Angerer of Cockeysville, Md., and 18 grandchildren.

Arrangements are incomplete at Lakeside Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m Sunday at the funeral home with burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.

Edward Lahey

Edward Lahey, 56, of Danville died at 11:21 last night at the Lakeview Hospital in Danville. He was born Oct. 30, 1921, the son of Edward Lahey, Sr. and May Murphy Lahey.

Mr. Lahey was a former Watseka and Kankakee resident but had lived in Danville since 1973. While a Watseka resident, he was a Chevrolet auto retailer.

Mr. Lahey married Ruth Wilson of Crookston, Minn. on Oct. 11, 1945.

He attended U. of I. until enlisting in the Air Force during WW II. While serving as a pilot with the Eighth Air Force in England, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous other decorations.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth, two daughters, Kathleen Lahey of Windsor, Ontario, Canada and Linda Jensen of Corvallis, Oregon, two sons, Thomas of Cassadaga, New York and Michael at home, his mother, Mrs. May Lahey of St. Louis, three sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Barnstead of St. Louis, Mrs. Theresa Waibel of St. Louis, and Mrs. Gracia Roney of Hinsdale, Il., two brothers, George of Columbia, Maryland, and Robert of Arlington Heights, Il. and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Lahey was a member of St. Edmund’s Catholic Church in Watseka. Services will be held, Mon., Jan. 2 at St. Edmund’s at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edmund Davern officiating. Visitation will be Sun. from 2-5 p.m. at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home with the Rosary at 4 p.m. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.


Elizabeth (Truman) Mertz

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Mertz, 41, wife of Jake Mertz, farmer, living west of Danville, who died Monday, were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morrison Funeral Home, Potomac, with H.G. Lanham in charge.The Rev. C.I. Roth officiated.

Mrs. Elizabeth Mertz, 41, wife of a farmer living west of Danville, died while giving birth to her 10th child Monday, Nov 22, 1937 at 10 a.m. Mrs. Mertz is the second to die of a family of 13 children, all of whom were born and raised in this vicinity. Her husband is Jake Mertz and for 15 years the family has lived on a farm west of Hillery. Born Feb.29, 1896, near Silverwood, Ind., Mrs. Mertz was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Truman. Her father died several years ago but her mother now lives in Veedersburg. Mrs. Truman formerly lived in Danville.

Surviving Mrs. Mertz, in addition to her husband and mother are the following children; Robert, Ivan, Bill, Thelma, Elmer, Ted, Betty, Melvin, Leonard. Ursala and the baby Martha. Ivan is a stepson.

Surviving brothers are D.H. Trueman, Marion, Ind., and Edward Truman, Mellott.

Nine Sisters who survive are Mrs. Sadie Harrington and Mrs Martin Switzer, Veedersburg, Mrs. Ed Lape and Mrs. Grace High of Danville, Mrs. Lawrence Brown, Akron, oh,; Mrs. Lorena Turpin, Cleveland; Mrs. D. V. Mitchell, Farmington, Mich,; Mrs. Fred Wagner, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Ferman Gallaher, Mellott.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at the Lanham Funeral Home in Potomac, with H.G. Lanham in charge. The Rev. Mr. Roth, Henning, will officiate.
